Nucor Targets Steel Grating Market With $59 Million Indiana Expansion

Nucor Corporation will invest $59 million to upgrade its Vulcraft manufacturing facility in St. Joe, Indiana, adding new production lines for steel grating. The project is set to generate 20 full-time jobs, bolstering a site that currently employs more than 300 people in DeKalb County.

This expansion represents the latest in a series of strategic bets Nucor has placed on its Indiana manufacturing footprint. Since 2021, the company has deployed capital into the state, including a $290 million modernization of its Crawfordsville sheet mill and a $115 million utility infrastructure plant. These initiatives have added approximately 300 jobs to the company's regional workforce, which now spans more than 2,600 teammates across a dozen locations.

John Hollatz, Executive Vice President of Fabricated Construction Products, stated that the move aligns with the firm’s broader strategy to strengthen downstream capabilities. Vulcraft, which Nucor acquired in 1962, serves as a cornerstone of the company’s history and its current market position as a leading producer of open-web steel joists and decking. The Indiana site, opened in 1972, will now integrate grating into its output, supporting the structural requirements of sectors ranging from data centers to large-scale industrial manufacturing.
