Money Market Assets Climb to $7.93 Trillion Amid Inflow Surge

Investors poured $18.26 billion into money market funds for the week ending August 12, pushing total assets to a record $7.93 trillion. The latest data from the Investment Company Institute highlights a continued preference for government-backed instruments, even as tax-exempt funds faced a notable contraction in capital.

Government funds led the weekly rally, adding $20.69 billion to their balance sheets, while prime funds saw a more modest increase of $1.79 billion. This growth was largely driven by institutional activity, which accounted for $13.86 billion of the total net increase. Conversely, tax-exempt money market funds saw an outflow of $4.22 billion, reflecting a shift in investor appetite across the sector.

Retail investors contributed $4.40 billion to the total growth, balancing gains in government and prime funds against a decline in tax-exempt holdings. The Investment Company Institute, which reports these figures weekly to the Federal Reserve, notes that these fluctuations serve as a proxy for net new cash flows. The current data reflects ongoing adjustments as the market navigates evolving interest rate environments and institutional liquidity requirements.
