Acurx Secures Regulatory and Trademark Approval for Ibezapolstat Brand

Acurx Pharmaceuticals has received conditional FDA acceptance and a federal trademark allowance from the USPTO for the name CIFBEZY. The branding marks a strategic step in the commercial development of ibezapolstat, the company's lead antibiotic candidate currently preparing for international Phase 3 clinical trials targeting Clostridioides difficile infection.

The company intends to use the proprietary name CIFBEZY as the commercial identity for ibezapolstat, an experimental antibiotic designed to treat both the acute phase of CDI and the prevention of recurrence. This naming process involved extensive collaboration with linguists, pharmacists, and medical prescribers to satisfy the FDA’s Division of Medication Error Prevention and Analysis, which prioritizes patient safety and the reduction of administration errors.

Robert J. DeLuccia, Executive Chairman of Acurx, stated that securing these intellectual property and regulatory milestones positions the firm to advance its clinical program. The company is currently moving toward a pivotal Phase 3 registration program and initiating the IBZ-PATHFINDER trial, which focuses on patients with multiply-recurrent infections. If approved, the drug aims to shift the current treatment paradigm by potentially offering a single-regimen solution for a condition that historically carries high recurrence rates and significant public health costs.
