Hyundai Funds UCI Student Support and Future Leaders Initiative

Hyundai Motor America has committed $15,000 to the UC Irvine Basic Needs Center to combat campus food insecurity, while simultaneously deepening its three-year partnership with the Paul Merage School of Business to bolster career readiness programs for underserved students in Southern California.

The donation arrives as food insecurity remains a persistent obstacle for higher education students nationwide. At UC Irvine, the Basic Needs Center serves as a vital safety net, providing emergency housing, financial wellness programming, and transportation assistance. Last year alone, the center’s food pantry logged 19,526 visits from 4,230 unique students. According to Andrea Mora, director of the center, the new funding will specifically expand the pantry’s inventory, allowing for a more diverse and nutrient-dense selection of provisions for those facing socioeconomic barriers to their degrees.

Beyond immediate material support, Hyundai is reinforcing its academic pipeline through the Future Leaders Initiative (FLI). Since 2023, the automotive company has contributed $90,000 to the program, which focuses on business education and financial literacy for underserved youth. During recent sessions, Hyundai executives provided direct mentorship, offering students a look into the automotive industry and the technological shifts defining the future of mobility. Brandon Ramirez, director of corporate social responsibility at Hyundai Motor North America, emphasized that these initiatives are designed to bridge the gap between current academic challenges and long-term career goals.
