Strait of Hormuz Traffic Stalls Amid Security Crisis

A projectile strike on a cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz has left one crew member dead and the engine room crippled, forcing tankers to linger in erratic patterns near Iranian-controlled lanes. The attack follows reports of a UAE-owned ship detention, pushing Brent crude prices above $91 per barrel.

Strait of Hormuz Traffic Stalls Amid Security Crisis

The Amara fuel tanker, which entered the Persian Gulf empty on Monday, currently remains motionless in northern transit lanes after performing a series of unexplained U-turns. This hesitation mirrors the broader instability gripping the region, as vessel-tracking data highlights a growing reluctance among captains to navigate the chokepoint following the Tuesday morning strike. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations confirmed the projectile impact, noting that the Omani Coast Guard has since evacuated the remaining crew from the damaged vessel.

While Fars news agency reported the detention of a separate UAE-owned tanker near Qeshm Island earlier this week, neither Tehran nor the UAE has issued formal confirmation. This lack of transparency, coupled with rising tensions between Iran and the United States, has rattled energy markets. With Brent Crude hitting $91 and WTI trading above $85, the volatility suggests that the maritime security crisis is now exerting immediate, quantifiable pressure on global oil supply routes.
