Caracal Opens Charlotte Facility to Tackle Hospital Waste

Millions of tons of non-hazardous waste leave operating rooms for landfills every year, a cycle Caracal Products & Services aims to break. The company is opening a new facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, specifically designed to process polypropylene and polyethylene materials collected from regional health care systems.

The Charlotte site serves as a hub for sorting and handling discarded hospital materials. Industrial balers compress collected plastics into dense blocks, which are then transported to specialized recyclers to be shredded, melted, and converted into raw plastic pellets. This process allows hospitals to divert significant waste volumes from landfills while simultaneously lowering disposal costs and meeting tightening environmental compliance standards.

Paul Sessions, VP and General Manager of Recycling, noted that the move provides a local partner for providers aiming to align their waste streams with sustainability goals. The Charlotte location joins existing infrastructure in New York and Baltimore, marking the latest step in Caracal’s planned expansion along the East Coast. The company currently supports health systems pursuing aggressive targets to recycle 100% of disposable materials, including shrink wrap, cardboard, and plastic bags.
