Panasonic and STEM Next Launch National AI Challenge for Students

High school students enrolled in out-of-school programs now have a new venue to test their technical ingenuity. The Panasonic Foundation and the STEM Next Opportunity Fund have launched the inaugural AI Innovation Challenge, a national competition that invites teenagers to deploy artificial intelligence to solve pressing local and global problems.

Participants are tasked with identifying challenges in fields ranging from climate resilience and public health to community safety and sustainable technology. Using AI as a primary research and development tool, students must document their exploration of potential solutions. The initiative aims to move beyond theoretical learning, requiring participants to demonstrate responsible AI usage and clear communication of their findings to a panel of judges. Projects will be evaluated on their innovation, impact, and alignment with career-connected learning goals.

Beyond the technical focus, the competition seeks to bridge the gap between classroom education and the demands of an evolving workforce. Alejandra Ceja, Executive Director of the Panasonic Foundation, noted that the program is designed to build the confidence necessary for students to succeed in an AI-driven economy. Successful entries will be awarded cash prizes, with two top-tier projects receiving $5,000 each, while three second-place and five third-place winners will earn $3,000 and $1,000 respectively. Final submissions are due November 19, 2026, with the winners scheduled to be announced in December.
