Loggerhead and Green Turtles Find Sanctuary at Sunset Royal Beach

The 2026 nesting season in Cancún has yielded 12,664 eggs across 107 nests on the Sunset Royal hotel beach, marking a significant milestone for local conservation. Since the first Loggerhead turtle arrived on June 4, hotel staff have managed the delicate process of protecting nests and facilitating the release of 870 hatchlings.

The beach fronting the Sunset Royal resort serves as a vital nesting ground for two specific species: the Loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and the Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas). To manage this influx, the Department of Ecology mandates rigorous training for hotel security personnel. Staff are tasked with the entire life-cycle management of the nests, from the initial beach preparation and clutch collection to the construction of secure enclosures.

Conservation protocols require a hands-on approach to ensure survival rates. Once eggs are collected, they are reburied in monitored sites where they remain until hatching. To minimize stress and predation, the subsequent release of hatchlings into the Caribbean is conducted exclusively at night and strictly without public observation. This initiative is part of a broader commitment by the Sunset World Group, which has integrated environmental stewardship into its hospitality operations through renewable energy usage and dedicated ecological programs across its six properties in the region.
