The exhibition moves beyond standard biographical displays, recreating Buffett’s Key West recording studio, Shrimp Boat Sound, and showcasing personal items ranging from his 12-string Martin guitar to his 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame statue. Curators spent two years gathering never-before-seen concert footage, handwritten lyrics, and personal scrapbooks to illustrate his evolution as an author, pilot, and sailor.
Executive Director Karen Poth describes the installation as a living project, noting that the museum plans to continuously integrate new stories and artifacts as they emerge. The site’s location on the Mobile waterfront holds specific significance, sitting directly across from the Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Co., where Buffett’s parents once worked. This geographic connection underscores the family’s maritime heritage, which serves as a central theme of the collection.
Opening weekend festivities begin September 11 at the historic Saenger Theater with performances by Mac McAnally and Scotty Emerick. The grand opening on September 12 will feature the unveiling of a monumental bronze sculpture of the late artist in Cooper Riverside Park. Tickets are currently available through the museum’s website, providing access to both the new experience and the broader maritime exhibits housed within the facility’s container ship-shaped structure.
