Starting August 19, 2026, the rollout begins a phased transition for over 1,000 colleges and universities currently served by the Nelnet platform. By incorporating these digital wallets, Nelnet aims to provide the same level of flexibility students already utilize for groceries, rent, and peer-to-peer transfers. Jackie Strohbehn, President of Nelnet Campus Commerce, noted that the partnership is designed to align institutional payment portals with the modern expectations of Gen Z and millennial users.
The integration leverages PayPal’s massive reach, which spans hundreds of millions of global accounts, and Venmo’s significant footprint among younger demographics. Frank Keller, President of Checkout Solutions at PayPal, emphasized that bringing familiar payment methods to campus environments simplifies the process for families. While the technology is new to the tuition space, Nelnet maintains that the integration adheres to strict PCI Level 1 security standards and existing enterprise resource planning systems, ensuring that the shift toward digital convenience does not compromise transaction reliability.
