Charlotte Targets Medtech and Manufacturing to Build Life Sciences Hub

With 160 companies and 12,400 workers already in place, the Charlotte Region is pivoting toward a specialized economic strategy. A new study from the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance and Deloitte outlines a blueprint to formalize the area’s identity as a powerhouse for medical technology and contract manufacturing.

The research, which involved over 50 stakeholders, identifies four primary pillars for recruitment: medical technologies, contract manufacturing, biologics, and consumer health. By leveraging existing infrastructure—such as the R1-status UNC Charlotte and the logistics network centered on Charlotte Douglas International Airport—the region aims to convert its manufacturing heritage into a high-growth sector. Leaders suggest that the area’s ability to offer a lower cost structure compared to traditional life sciences hubs, combined with a workforce possessing transferable technical skills, creates a distinct competitive advantage.

Dr. Kulleni Gebreyes of Deloitte noted that the region’s opportunity lies in linking its diverse assets, including established health systems and a growing research base. Rather than competing directly with the Research Triangle’s R&D focus, Charlotte is positioning itself as a complementary manufacturing-led hub. The CLT Alliance has already begun implementing three core recommendations: strengthening stakeholder connectivity, enhancing data-driven market intelligence, and promoting a unified regional narrative to attract global capital and specialized talent.
