Why Maine Households Are Turning to Umbrella Insurance

For Maine residents, a standard auto or homeowners policy may not be enough to shield personal wealth from a significant lawsuit. Tate Ficker of Ficker Insurance Group argues that umbrella insurance serves as a critical financial bridge, covering the gap when liability claims exceed basic coverage limits.

Umbrella insurance functions as a secondary layer of protection, activating once primary policy limits are exhausted. In a state like Maine, where property ownership and variable conditions create unique risk profiles, this coverage provides a safety net for those with substantial assets, including home equity, retirement savings, and multiple vehicles. Policies typically begin at $1 million in coverage, offering a defense against the rapid escalation of legal fees and damages following a major incident.

Contrary to the assumption that such protection is reserved only for the wealthy, Ficker emphasizes that risk exposure dictates the need for additional coverage. Even if a lawsuit is ultimately dismissed, the cost of legal defense alone can threaten personal financial stability. Because premiums for these policies are often modest relative to the level of liability protection provided, they represent a cost-effective strategy for risk management. Before securing an umbrella policy, however, policyholders must ensure their existing auto and homeowners insurance meet the minimum threshold requirements set by their provider.
