The rally persists even as the U.S. flash composite PMI hit a four-year high of 56.0 in August, signaling robust economic activity. While Federal Reserve officials remain wary of persistent inflation, market participants are largely banking on a rate hold this September. Gold has successfully cleared its 200-day moving average, buoyed by the dollar index slipping below 99.00 and ongoing fiscal anxiety, as traders now pivot their focus toward upcoming PCE inflation data and remarks from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh at Jackson Hole.
Silver has shown particular strength, outperforming gold as industrial demand narratives intensify. Having surged past key resistance levels throughout the week, the metal is now eyeing the $71.00 to $72.08 range. Meanwhile, the energy sector remains a source of volatility; the stalemate in U.S.-Iran peace talks and ongoing regional shipping disruptions have kept crude prices elevated. This environment leaves the market in a conflicted state: while defensive demand supports gold, sustained crude prices keep inflation risks high, complicating any potential retreat in Treasury yields.
