The Gothenburg-based company reports that the bulk of these orders originate from the heavy-lift and multipurpose vessel sectors, alongside a notable resurgence in container ship procurement. MacGregor’s current lineup, specifically the HCE-series for heavy lifting and MCE-series for containers, relies on second-generation variable frequency drive technology. These systems reportedly cut energy consumption by up to 60% compared to legacy hydraulic drives while eliminating the environmental risk of oil leakage.
Magnus Sjöberg, Executive Vice President of the Merchant Solutions Division, noted that electric drive technology has matured into an industry standard. The transition reflects a broader push for operational savings and reduced carbon footprints. MacGregor has been refining this technology for two decades, with more than 800 units currently in service. Beyond cranes, the firm is expanding its electrified portfolio to include hatch covers, deck machinery, and walk-to-work gangways to support the lifecycle of modern maritime fleets.
