Riverside Research and Tera AI Partner to Bypass GPS-Denied Navigation

Conflict lead: Autonomous systems face a growing threat as electronic warfare increasingly targets GPS, rendering standard navigation unreliable. To counter this, national security nonprofit Riverside Research is partnering with startup Tera AI to integrate DeepSLAM technology, allowing aerial and surface vehicles to map their surroundings without reliance on satellite signals.

The collaboration centers on Tera AI’s proprietary spatial reasoning software, which utilizes passive cameras to generate real-time 3D maps. By adopting these world models, autonomous platforms can maintain situational awareness even when signals are jammed or spoofed. Tera AI founder Dr. Tony Zhang noted that historical autonomy relied on fragile, GPS-dependent dependencies, whereas this new approach provides domain-agnostic navigation suitable for contested environments.

For Riverside Research, the integration of DeepSLAM into its existing portfolio addresses critical vulnerabilities in both military and commercial sectors. Vice President Carl Nerup highlighted that the technology serves as a reliable fallback for unmanned vehicles and aircraft when standard positioning fails. By filling these intelligence gaps, the partnership aims to ensure mission continuity across the Department of Defense and the broader intelligence community.
