The U.S. Treasury Department unveiled "Operation Economic Outcast" on Monday, aiming to disrupt the shipping and oil networks that facilitate Iranian revenue. The sanctions hit brokers and shadow-fleet vessels across jurisdictions including Hong Kong, Singapore, and Switzerland. Notably, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stopped short of targeting major Chinese banks, a move that leaves a strategic buffer in the escalating financial standoff.
Beijing maintains that its commercial interactions with Tehran remain consistent with international law. Lin Jian argued that the U.S. strategy fuels global instability and threatens the interests of third-party nations. While the current measures stop short of a total banking blockade, China’s firm rhetoric suggests that any future expansion of these sanctions could trigger direct retaliation, further complicating the already strained economic relationship between the two superpowers.
