The project, realized through a partnership with Durham School Services and Highland Electric Fleets, marks a significant shift in the district's infrastructure. By utilizing Highland’s Electrification-as-a-Service model, the district manages the transition from vehicle procurement to charging station deployment. Officials emphasize that the switch is not merely environmental, as the simplified mechanics of electric motors require less upkeep than standard combustion engines.

Superintendent Wendy Johnson noted that the investment reflects a broader commitment to sustainability, following previous district initiatives in geothermal and solar energy. To mark the launch, a ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for August 26 at the district’s transportation facility on W. Gowen Road. Beyond the immediate health benefits of improved air quality, the district plans to integrate these new vehicles into environmental education opportunities for its 21,650 students.
