I.S.T. Corporation Debuts White TORMED Polyimide Film for Spacecraft

At the 40th Annual Small Satellite Conference in Salt Lake City, I.S.T. Corporation unveiled White TORMED, a 25-micron polyimide film engineered to replace labor-intensive thermal-control coatings. By shifting from traditional liquid applications to a finished film, the company aims to streamline spacecraft assembly and material integration.

The new material is designed to provide consistent thermal performance across complex surfaces, including edges and corners, while keeping mass to a minimum. Unlike traditional coatings that require repetitive drying and curing stages, this non-fluoropolymer film allows for direct application and adhesive-free co-curing with prepreg composite structures. This patent-pending integration technology is intended to reduce manufacturing time and processing costs for satellite integrators.

White TORMED builds upon the company’s existing transparent TORMED platform, which has already undergone orbital testing via the Euro Material Ageing experiment on the International Space Station. While the transparent version serves as a protective cover for solar modules, the white iteration is specifically optimized for thermal regulation. I.S.T. Corporation has begun offering A4-sized evaluation sheets, with plans to initiate pilot production of 300 mm-wide rolls in November 2026. The company’s long-term roadmap targets mass production of 1,000 mm-wide rolls by fall 2028, provided market demand and technical benchmarks remain on track.
