Only Human: BOUND Revives the Unfinished Prometheus Myth

Two and a half millennia after Aeschylus left his protagonist chained to a rock, the psychological sci-fi audio serial Only Human: BOUND is nearing its season finale. By framing its central conflict through the lens of a lost Greek trilogy, the series explores the endurance of defiance in a near-future setting.

The series follows A135X, a political prisoner trapped in a cycle of memory erasure by a Judiciary AI. While the narrative employs the tropes of classic science fiction, creator Frank Gullo anchors the struggle in the ancient myth of Prometheus. For Gullo, the character represents an eternal refusal to submit—a trait he argues is missing from heroes like Odysseus or Hercules, who eventually find their way home or complete their tasks.

This structural choice addresses a historical gap in Western literature. Only the first play of the Aeschylus trilogy, Prometheus Bound, survived antiquity, leaving the subsequent chapters lost to time. The audio production, co-produced by Rochester’s Scott Fitzgerald of ROC Vox, treats this void as a creative prompt rather than a closed book. Fitzgerald, who also voices the series’ AI antagonist, utilizes layered sound design to modernize the tradition of "theater of the mind" serials. The final episodes of the season are scheduled for release across all major podcast platforms through September 7.
