Valmet to Upgrade Helsinki’s Salmisaari Plant for Enhanced Heat Recovery

Finnish energy provider Helen is set to install a new flue gas condensing plant at its Salmisaari pellet-fired facility in Helsinki. Delivered by Valmet, the upgrade aims to capture waste heat from combustion, significantly boosting the site's energy efficiency and increasing district heating output for the city’s residents.

The project centers on condensation technology that transforms water vapor from flue gases back into usable thermal energy. By integrating this system into the existing K6 pellet heating unit, Helen expects to maximize fuel utilization and lower overall emission profiles. A notable technical feature involves connecting the condenser to the city’s district cooling network, which allows flue gas temperatures to drop below 10 degrees Celsius without requiring additional heat pumps.

Juhani Aaltonen, Senior Vice President at Helen, noted that the investment strengthens the Salmisaari plant’s role in the company's broader clean transition strategy. Valmet, which previously supplied the core heating units, will integrate the new equipment to ensure seamless performance and simplified maintenance. The order was secured in the second quarter of 2026, with the plant expansion scheduled for completion in the second half of 2027.
