CollPlant Diversifies Into Photonic Computing With LightSolver Buyout

CollPlant Biotechnologies has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Israeli deep-tech firm LightSolver, marking a pivot into high-performance computing. The deal, expected to close this week, positions CollPlant to develop laser-based processing units designed to bypass the traditional energy and speed constraints of semiconductor-driven hardware.

LightSolver, founded in 2020 by physicists from the Weizmann Institute, has developed a Laser Processing Unit (LPU) that uses light interactions to perform parallel computations. Unlike quantum systems that require cryogenic cooling, the LPU operates at room temperature, aiming to serve as a specialized computing layer alongside existing CPU and GPU architectures. The technology is currently undergoing commercial validation through partnerships with companies including Boeing, focusing on complex aerospace simulations and mission-critical engineering workloads.

Yehiel Tal, CEO of CollPlant, stated that while the company remains committed to regenerative medicine, this acquisition introduces a significant growth vector in the supercomputing sector. Under the terms of the agreement, the transaction utilizes an equity-centric structure. CollPlant will issue over 3.7 million ordinary shares upfront, representing 19.7% of its pre-deal capital, alongside pre-funded and milestone-based warrants. These additional tranches are tied to the achievement of specific technological and commercial benchmarks, with the ultimate goal of achieving full market availability by 2028.
