Yucca Valley Material Lab Seeks Final $285,000 for Mojave Adobe Studio

With $1.2 million already secured, the Yucca Valley Material Lab has opened the public phase of its $1.5 million capital campaign. The nonprofit aims to finalize funding for a 1,700-square-foot, all-electric adobe arts facility designed to withstand the harsh environmental realities of the California Mojave Desert.

Founding Director Heidi Schwegler describes the project as more than just physical expansion. The new Sustainable Studio, designed by Terrain, utilizes locally sourced soil and high-thermal-mass adobe walls to achieve a 75 percent reduction in carbon emissions compared to conventional structures. By utilizing on-site brickmaking, the building serves as a living curriculum for students and artists, allowing the construction process itself to function as a tool for community education.

Accessibility remains a core pillar of this development. Beyond the new studio, the organization secured a $40,000 grant from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation to implement ADA improvements across its existing residence and studio spaces. Supported further by a $100,000 Frankenthaler Climate Initiative grant, the project is positioned to expand YVML’s capacity for year-round workshops and residencies. Since its founding in 2019, the lab has served over 1,000 students and supported 60 artists, and this final fundraising push seeks to ensure the facility's long-term endowment and operational stability.
