Tennessee American Water Issues New PFAS Settlement Credit

Active customer accounts in Tennessee and north Georgia are receiving an $11.92 bill credit this week, the latest distribution of funds recovered from manufacturers of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. This payout brings the total compensation provided to each household to more than $71 since the legal settlement process began.

The credit, applied to all accounts active as of August 28, 2026, follows a larger distribution of $59.36 issued earlier this March. The Tennessee Public Utility Commission authorized the utility to pass these settlement proceeds directly to consumers as the funds arrive, rather than holding them in corporate accounts.

Beyond these direct financial distributions, the utility is currently directing $45 million toward capital improvements across its service territory. These projects aim to align local infrastructure with tightening federal regulations regarding PFAS contamination. The company serves approximately 425,000 residents across the region, maintaining a commitment to update water treatment processes to meet evolving safety standards.
