Streator Residents Face Two-Month Water Main Flushing Schedule

Beginning Tuesday, September 1, Illinois American Water will initiate its annual distribution system maintenance in Streator, a process that involves opening fire hydrants to clear mineral deposits and sediment from water mains. The work is scheduled to continue through October 2 to ensure long-term service reliability.

Operations Superintendent Terry Ragusa noted that the flushing program serves a dual purpose: improving water quality and verifying that fire hydrants remain fully functional for emergency use. The process clears dead-end mains via blowoff valves and increases flow rates across the local infrastructure.

While the company does not anticipate service interruptions, residents may experience temporary drops in pressure or discolored water. Officials suggest keeping a pitcher of water in the refrigerator during the maintenance window and checking for clarity before running laundry or dishwashers. If discoloration occurs, running a cold-water tap until the line clears is recommended. Residents are also advised to avoid active work zones where crews are operating equipment. Those who wish to track specific maintenance schedules can update their preferences in their MyWater account or monitor the company’s online Customer Advisory Map.
