Ultra Violette Debuts First FDA-Approved Bemotrizinol Sunscreen in US

After a quarter-century of regulatory stagnation, the US suncare market is evolving. Australian brand Ultra Violette has introduced Unblock Screen SPF 50, marking the first time a product containing the broad-spectrum filter Bemotrizinol—recently cleared by the FDA—has reached American consumers.

The arrival of Bemotrizinol (BEMT) signals a shift in domestic sunscreen standards. Unlike traditional chemical filters, BEMT is photostable and requires lower concentrations to achieve high-level protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Its inclusion on the FDA’s GRASE list—Generally Recognized As Safe and Effective—allows formulators to create lighter, non-comedogenic textures that avoid the white cast often associated with mineral-based alternatives.

Ultra Violette co-founders Ava Matthews and Bec Jefferd are leveraging nearly a decade of international experience with the ingredient to secure a first-mover advantage at Sephora. The new $40 Unblock Screen targets acne-prone skin by pairing BEMT with Bix'Activ to manage oil production and Pentavitin for hydration. This launch serves as a precursor to a wider product rollout, including the Fave Screen formula slated for January 2027. By integrating BEMT into its US catalog, the brand aims to challenge long-standing stigmas surrounding chemical sunscreens while offering textures designed for daily cosmetic use.
