Haunted Attraction Industry Pushes Halloween Kickoff to September

For dedicated horror enthusiasts, the Halloween season no longer waits for October. America Haunts, a national association of premier scare venues, is launching its "First Fright" initiative this year, with eighteen major member attractions opening their doors between September 11 and October 2 to capture early-bird thrill-seekers.

The strategy targets fans who prioritize being the first to navigate new, elaborate sets before the peak crowds of late October arrive. By staggering opening dates across the country—starting with Niles Scream Park in Michigan and The Dent Schoolhouse in Ohio on September 11—the group encourages regional travel and weekend getaways. Amber Arnett-Bequeaith, spokesperson for America Haunts, suggests that these early openings transform the attractions into destination events, allowing families to combine a night of scares with local exploration before the holiday rush begins.

Collectively, these member venues entertain over one million visitors annually, setting industry standards for technical production and immersive design. With the schedule extending through mid-November for several locations, the association aims to turn the fall months into a sustained season for the industry. Whether visiting The 13th Gate in Baton Rouge or the Boston-area Spooky World, the goal is to secure bragging rights for those willing to confront the season’s first scares.
