IKEA Commits EUR 1.2 Billion to Lower European Retail Prices

With households across Europe struggling under the weight of sustained inflation, IKEA is launching a massive 1.2 billion euro investment to slash prices on hundreds of core products. The move marks a strategic shift toward lower profit margins to ensure the retailer remains accessible during a period of economic instability.

The initiative, which takes effect September 1, targets iconic items including the KALLAX storage series, the HEMNES daybed, and the POÄNG armchair. Reductions across the continent will average between 15% and 25%, though specific adjustments will vary by local market. In Germany, over 1,500 items see an average price drop of 20%, with the BESTÅ TV bench falling by 27%. Similar patterns emerge in the UK and Italy, where staples like the BILLY bookcase and TROFAST storage systems have been marked down by 28% and 24% respectively.

Juvencio Maeztu, CEO of Ingka Group, framed the decision as a fundamental commitment to the customer rather than a temporary marketing campaign. Beyond the European price cuts, the company is allocating an additional 70 million euros to Asia and North America to mitigate local inflationary pressures. This capital injection accompanies a broader retail strategy focused on expanding the company's footprint through smaller, more accessible store formats.
