Cloover Hits Profitability at $350M Run-Rate as Neo-Utility Ambitions Grow

Three years after its inception, Berlin-based Cloover has achieved profitability while scaling to a $350 million revenue run-rate. The company is now leveraging its position as an AI-native energy platform to expand into the UK, France, and Poland, transforming residential solar and heat pump installations into a massive virtual power plant.

Founded in 2023 by Jodok Betschart, Peder Broms, and Valentin Gönczy, Cloover differentiates itself by acting as a backend engine for independent installers who control roughly 85% of the market. Rather than competing with local contractors, the firm provides the financing, software, and hardware necessary to close residential energy projects in under two minutes. This model has already generated 20,000 installations annually, fueling a rapid expansion backed by $1.3 billion in total financing capacity, including a significant $350 million guarantee from the European Investment Fund.

The Shift to Neo-Utility Operations

Beyond financing, Cloover is evolving into an AI-native neo-utility by aggregating distributed energy assets—such as batteries, EV chargers, and heat pumps—into a virtual power plant. By using AI to automate the optimization of energy consumption and storage across thousands of homes, the company captures value from grid flexibility and intraday market trading. As European feed-in tariffs phase out, this approach allows homeowners to monetize their system’s flexibility in real time. Cloover’s founders argue that by turning homes into productive energy assets, they are building a model that thrives without government subsidies, positioning the company at the center of Europe’s shifting energy landscape.
