Medtronic Raises Annual Outlook After Strong First-Quarter Surge

A 14% revenue climb to $9.76 billion has prompted Medtronic to lift its full-year guidance, signaling robust demand across its cardiovascular and neuroscience divisions. The medical-device giant now anticipates adjusted annual earnings between $5.94 and $6 per share, outpacing previous forecasts and analyst expectations for the latest quarter.

Medtronic Raises Annual Outlook After Strong First-Quarter Surge

The company’s fiscal first-quarter results, which ended July 31, saw net income reach $1.47 billion, or $1.14 a share. Excluding one-time items, earnings hit $1.45 a share, comfortably beating the $1.39 consensus among analysts polled by FactSet. Chief Financial Officer Thierry Piéton credited the performance to disciplined management and strong operational execution, which provided the financial cushion necessary to revise annual targets upward.

Beyond core earnings, Medtronic is aggressively expanding its technological footprint through two strategic investments totaling $780 million. The company will commit $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics to distribute its Sentire surgical system internationally, complementing Medtronic's own Hugo robotic platform. Additionally, an $80 million stake in Pi-Cardia secures access to structural heart technology, with an option to acquire the firm for roughly $210 million if specific development milestones are met. These moves helped drive an 8.3% increase in Medtronic shares during premarket trading.
