Fervo Energy Surges on Massive Geothermal Deal with Google

A 396-megawatt power agreement between Fervo Energy and Alphabet’s Google sent the geothermal developer’s shares climbing 13% to $17.38 in premarket trading. The contract, the largest in the startup's history, secures a steady energy supply for Google’s expanding Utah data center infrastructure starting in 2028.

Fervo Energy Surges on Massive Geothermal Deal with Google

This deal serves as a critical financial catalyst for the $2 billion Cape Station geothermal facility. Fervo Energy confirmed the agreement provides the necessary backing to continue scaling its operations, with the first phase of the project scheduled to feed electricity into the grid later this year. Beyond the initial commitment, Google retains an option to expand the procurement by an additional 600 megawatts through mid-2030.

For Google, the partnership marks a strategic move to secure carbon-free, baseload power amidst the tech industry's frantic race to build the infrastructure required for artificial intelligence and cloud computing. By shifting toward geothermal, the company aims to meet the immense energy demands of its data centers with a consistent source that bypasses the intermittency issues often associated with wind and solar power.
