Students Invited to Tackle Food Waste in National Challenge

One in five American children faces hunger while nearly 30 percent of the nation's food supply goes to waste. The newly launched Hunger Action Heroes Unite! National Challenge aims to bridge this gap by tasking students in grades 4 through 9 with developing local solutions to rescue food and feed their communities.

The contest, which opened September 1, 2026, encourages young participants to document hands-on projects ranging from school composting programs to cafeteria waste reduction and food bank volunteering. Supported by a coalition including Feeding San Diego and the World Wildlife Fund, the initiative seeks to empower students to address the $1.7 billion in food waste generated annually in school cafeterias.

To enter, students must submit a project summary through a parent or guardian by March 12, 2027. Two National Champions—one from the 4–6 grade division and one from the 7–9 grade division—will be announced on National Superhero Day, April 28, 2027. Winners receive a trip to San Diego for Comic-Con 2027, a $750 college scholarship, and a $3,000 impact grant for their school. Dana Williams, Director of Social Impact for the organization, emphasizes that the program is designed to turn empathy into tangible action, noting that real-world change often begins with students identifying local needs.
