Local pantries, including the Mountaineer Food Bank and the Garrett County Food Bank, will utilize these funds to restock shelves as they face surging demand. According to Feeding America, more than 1.2 million people in the two states—including 354,000 children—currently struggle with food insecurity.

Chris Beam, president of FirstEnergy’s West Virginia and Maryland operations, emphasized that the funding serves as a vital bridge for families, seniors, and children. Beyond the capital infusion, the company leverages its Volunteer Time Off program to provide labor for these nonprofits. In 2025, FirstEnergy employees contributed roughly 28,500 hours to community causes, an effort valued at over $1 million. The 2026 grant cycle marks a notable expansion, incorporating three first-time recipients into the network of 43 supported agencies.
