Roy Rogers Named First Head Coach of Liverpool Basketball

With nearly two decades of NBA experience, Roy Rogers has been appointed the inaugural head coach for Liverpool Basketball. His arrival marks a significant shift for the club as it prepares for the 2026-27 Super League Basketball season, aiming to establish a competitive identity at the M&S Bank Arena.

Club owner Jason Dolan described the appointment as a strategic move to set the tone for the franchise's debut. Rogers, whose resume includes coaching stints with the Portland Trail Blazers, Los Angeles Clippers, and Chicago Bulls, joins the organization after a tenure at the University of Memphis. He previously played in the 1996 NBA draft class alongside icons like Kobe Bryant and Allen Iverson.

The new head coach will be supported by assistant Paul Cantwell, formerly of the Yorkshire Dragons. For Rogers, the opportunity to build a program from the ground up in a city with deep sporting roots proved decisive. The team is scheduled to play its home opener on October 4 against Manchester, signaling the start of a project intended to elevate the standard of professional basketball in Great Britain.
