Christoph Ammann tapped to lead Swiss National Bank Council

The Swiss government has appointed Christoph Ammann to preside over the Swiss National Bank’s Bank Council, the oversight body responsible for governance at the central bank. Ammann, who has served on the council since 2019, will assume the presidency on May 1, 2027, following a scheduled leadership transition.

Ammann will succeed Barbara Janom Steiner, who concludes her tenure after reaching the maximum allowable term limit. Steiner has held the position since 2019. Prior to this appointment, Ammann built his career in the Canton of Bern, where he served as a member of the Cantonal Government and headed the Department of Economic Affairs, Energy and Environment.

While the Bank Council maintains rigorous oversight of the SNB’s operations, including monitoring compliance with legislative directives and institutional regulations, it holds no authority over monetary policy decisions. This transition ensures continuity for the council, which remains distinct from the policy-making functions of the central bank’s Governing Board.
