CME Group Records Second-Highest August Trading Volumes

Investors traded 29.7 million contracts per day on the CME Group marketplace last month, marking the exchange's second-highest August performance on record. This 6% year-over-year growth was driven by a surge in demand for interest rate products and a significant 48% spike in metals trading activity.

Interest rate products remained the core engine of the exchange, with an average daily volume of 16.7 million contracts. Within this segment, U.S. Treasury futures and options saw a 15% increase, bolstered by record-setting activity in Ultra U.S. Treasury Bond futures, which reached 791,000 contracts. Other gains were broad-based: equity index volume rose 7%, while agricultural products saw a 12% boost, highlighted by record results for both Chicago SRW and KC HRW wheat futures.

Metals and micro-sized products drew particular interest from market participants. Micro Gold futures volume climbed 81%, and Micro Silver futures surged 286% compared to the previous August. Furthermore, the BrokerTec platform recorded an average daily notional value of $1.059 trillion, a 16% increase, supported by strong European Repo demand. International participation also grew, with EMEA and APAC volumes rising 9% and 12% respectively.
