Founded in 2008 through a collaboration between Claremont Graduate University, Harvey Mudd College, and the University of Southern California, MƒA LA focuses on retaining experienced math and computer science teachers in urban public schools. Yong, who currently holds the McGregor-Girand Chair in STEM Equity Innovation and Research at Harvey Mudd College, has already secured $17 million in National Science Foundation grants to bolster the organization’s peer-driven development programs. His leadership follows the tenure of co-founder Pam Mason, who established the group’s core community values.

The organization’s strategy relies on a team-based approach, requiring educators to join as school-based units rather than isolated individuals. This method ensures that instructional expertise and advanced curriculum strategies remain embedded within school departments. As he steps into the top leadership role, Yong aims to widen this footprint across Southern California, leveraging his background in both academic research and direct classroom experience—including a year-long sabbatical spent teaching alongside MƒA LA fellows.
