InterDigital Secures Third Patent Injunction Against Disney

The Unified Patent Court in Dusseldorf has granted InterDigital a third injunction against Disney, ruling that the entertainment giant infringed on proprietary technology. The decision, effective in Germany and the Netherlands, targets a patent that enables seamless video transitions for users switching between different devices during playback.

InterDigital Secures Third Patent Injunction Against Disney

This latest ruling stems from litigation launched by InterDigital last year, which centers on the company’s foundational mobile, video, and artificial intelligence research. The court determined that Disney utilized protected methods without authorization, marking a significant escalation in their ongoing intellectual property dispute.

Previous court orders focused on High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) techniques, while this third judgment underscores the scope of InterDigital’s influence over streaming architecture. Chief Legal Officer Josh Schmidt framed the win as a validation of the company's role in shaping the modern viewing experience. While Disney retains the right to appeal, the current outcome forces a legal reckoning over the distribution and processing standards used across its digital platforms. InterDigital maintains that securing these returns is necessary to fund future R&D initiatives.
