The nine primates, known collectively as the "York 9," include individuals like Hannah who have spent over 17 years in captivity. Last Chance for Animals (LCA) released findings in April 2026 detailing the use of permanent restraint collars, repeated surgeries, and cranial implants. The investigation also captured footage of abnormal behaviors such as constant pacing and swaying, alongside evidence of water deprivation and untreated injuries, including a bleeding implant site on a macaque named Kenny.

LCA has since filed a formal complaint with the Canadian Council on Animal Care. The organization is also challenging the university's $40 million investment in a new neuroscience research building, which includes plans for a larger vivarium. While York University previously awarded Dr. Jane Goodall an honorary degree for her conservation work, the institute bearing her name now argues that its commitment to animal welfare necessitates a departure from invasive primate experimentation. As public protests continue to mount on campus, LCA is urging the administration to abandon further expansion and transition toward non-animal research methods.
