The festival, which began in 2013, centers on the theme of remembrance through more than 80 community-built altars. Families, schools, and local artists construct these tributes to honor deceased loved ones, creating a sprawling outdoor exhibition that defines the event's atmosphere. The celebration kicks off on Friday evening with a dedicated sensory-friendly viewing period followed by a fashion show highlighting traditional aesthetics. Throughout the weekend, five stages host live music and performances, while the Muertos Mercado features over 75 art vendors.

Central to the weekend are two signature processions, where participants walk in memory of specific individuals through music and dance. Organizers are currently accepting applications for those wishing to build an altar or join the processions via the festival website. This year, the event partners with Letras en la Frontera and UNAM San Antonio to revive the Day of the Dead Bookstore, a literary addition introduced last year. With the San Antonio Area Chevy Dealers returning as title sponsor, the free event continues to anchor the city's cultural calendar.
