The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 295.07 points to 53,061.95, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite posted gains of 0.46% and 0.45% respectively. This upward momentum arrived even as private payrolls increased by a modest 38,000 in August, the slowest growth since January. The cooling labor data, combined with New York Fed President John Williams signaling a potential shift toward supporting rate hikes, kept bond market volatility in check, with the 10-year Treasury yield easing to 4.793%.
Corporate activity remained tethered to the artificial intelligence boom and geopolitical shifts. Chevron announced a $7 billion investment in Venezuela to double production, while Dell Technologies shares surged 16% as its AI-driven order backlog swelled to $95 billion. In contrast, Palo Alto Networks fell 9.3% despite robust revenue growth, as investors punished the firm for missing aggressive expectations. Meanwhile, Google secured a significant legal victory, as a federal judge rejected the Justice Department's attempt to force the divestiture of its advertising business.
