Lundbeck to detail bexicaserin’s dual-action mechanism in Athens

Lundbeck is set to present new preclinical findings on bexicaserin at the upcoming European Epilepsy Congress in Athens, Greece, offering a deeper look at the drug's dual mode of action. The data highlight the compound’s ability to modulate neuronal activity, a key step in its ongoing Phase III development program.

The oral presentation, led by Jesper F. Bastlund, will explore how bexicaserin functions as a highly selective 5-HT2c receptor superagonist. By simultaneously increasing inhibitory signaling and suppressing excitatory neuronal activity, the drug aims to address the network hyperexcitability that characterizes developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs). These rare, severe conditions often result in treatment-resistant seizures, leaving many patients with limited therapeutic options.

Beyond the mechanistic insights, the company will share clinical updates from its broader research pipeline. These include findings from the Phase 1b/2a PACIFIC trial and an interim analysis of an expanded access program. As the drug moves through its global Phase III DEEp Program—covering both the DEEp OCEAN and DEEp SEA trials—these presentations serve to validate the scientific rationale behind the therapy. Tarek Samad, Lundbeck's Head of Research & Development, emphasized that these findings are central to addressing the significant unmet needs of patients living with highly heterogeneous epilepsy syndromes.
