Studsvik Taps GE Vernova and Samsung C&T for Swedish Nuclear Expansion

Sweden is moving toward a major shift in its energy landscape, as Studsvik teams up with GE Vernova Hitachi and Samsung C&T to potentially add 1.2 gigawatts of nuclear power. The consortium aims to deploy four BWRX-300 small modular reactors, targeting a mid-2030s launch for the first unit.

The project arrives as the Swedish government aggressively pivots to bolster its energy grid through state-backed loans, revised pricing structures, and streamlined permitting. While the nation currently relies on six reactors producing 7 gigawatts, official targets demand an additional 2.5 gigawatts by 2035, scaling to 10 gigawatts by 2045.

Studsvik is narrowing the search for a site to two locations south of Stockholm: its existing facility in Nykoping or a new site in Valdemarsvik. Under the current division of labor, Studsvik manages the regulatory and community engagement hurdles, while GE Vernova Hitachi provides the reactor design and licensing support. Samsung C&T joins them as a core member of the execution team, with financing led by DS Investment Partners and advisory support from GE Vernova Financial Services.

Though the agreement establishes an exclusive partnership for immediate technical and commercial development, it stops short of a final investment decision or construction authorization. A dedicated joint project company will ultimately oversee the ownership and long-term operation of the plants once the details are finalized.
