Genesco Returns to Profitability Amid Strategic Retrenchment

Nashville-based retailer Genesco posted net earnings of $3.5 million for the fiscal second quarter ending August 1, marking a sharp recovery from the $18.5 million loss recorded during the same period last year, even as the company grapples with a 3% decline in total net sales to $529.9 million.

Genesco Returns to Profitability Amid Strategic Retrenchment

The turnaround effort, led by CEO Mimi Vaughn, relies on a strategy of store closures and reduced discounting to preserve margins. While this approach dampened top-line revenue, it yielded an adjusted loss of 83 cents per share, significantly outperforming the $1.37 per share loss projected by Wall Street analysts. Growth within the Journeys and Johnston & Murphy brands provided a necessary buffer against ongoing weakness in the Schuh banner, which saw a decline in performance.

Management maintains a confident outlook, guiding for adjusted earnings at the high end of its $2 to $2.40 per share range. Despite this bottom-line optimism, the company lowered its annual sales forecast, now anticipating a 2% drop for the year compared to earlier projections of flat performance. Vaughn noted that the current sales dip is a calculated byproduct of the company’s license transitions and disciplined expense management, suggesting that performance metrics will stabilize as the business moves past these structural adjustments.
