FibroBiologics Patents Topical Fibroblast Treatment for Chronic Wounds

The United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted FibroBiologics patent No. 12,721,866, covering the topical use of 3D spheroid fibroblasts to accelerate tissue repair. The Houston-based biotech firm aims to address the significant clinical burden of non-healing injuries like diabetic ulcers and pressure wounds through this regenerative approach.

The newly issued patent protects methods for delivering fibroblast-derived materials—including exosomes, microvesicles, and apoptotic bodies—directly to wound sites. Preclinical trials demonstrated that these 3D spheroids act as living reservoirs, migrating and proliferating to reduce inflammation and shorten healing times in both diabetic and non-diabetic models.

Chief Executive Officer Pete O'Heeron stated the technology aims to shift the standard of care for patients suffering from persistent wounds. According to Chief Scientific Officer Hamid Khoja, the spheroids provide regenerative signals that directly resolve chronic damage. With this latest addition, FibroBiologics now holds more than 270 issued and pending patents, further expanding its intellectual property portfolio in cell therapy and tissue regeneration.
