Mammotome Ramps Up Production Amid National Biopsy Needle Shortage

As supply chain interruptions threaten timely breast cancer diagnostics, Cincinnati-based Mammotome is scaling manufacturing of its stereotactic biopsy systems. The company aims to mitigate delays for patients across the U.S. following an official FDA warning that the current shortage of essential needles will persist into early 2027.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration officially added stereotactic breast biopsy needles to its medical device shortages list earlier this year, citing supply interruptions that could delay critical diagnostic pathways. With the scarcity expected to persist through the first quarter of 2027, providers are facing significant challenges in maintaining routine screening and biopsy schedules.

In response, Mammotome has accelerated the production of its Revolve Stereotactic Dual Vacuum-Assisted system and associated consumables. Scott Treml, Vice President and General Manager, noted that the company is prioritizing speed to ensure clinicians maintain access to reliable diagnostic tools. Beyond manufacturing, the firm is coordinating with medical societies and health systems to stabilize supply chains and minimize the impact on patient care. Clinicians seeking equipment are advised to contact local representatives or visit the company's website to navigate current distribution efforts.
