BWX Technologies Tapped for Y-12 Lithium Processing Design

The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration has selected BWX Technologies to draft a conceptual design for a critical lithium processing module. This facility, slated for the Y-12 National Security Complex, marks a strategic push to modernize infrastructure at the primary site for nuclear weapons production and storage.

The agency awarded a $4 million contract to BWX, initiating a competitive four-month evaluation phase. During this window, federal officials will weigh the company’s proposal against a design from a rival firm before selecting a single contractor to finalize the plans. Following the design phase, the government will move into negotiations to secure a developer team for the actual construction of the module.

To execute this project, BWX has assembled a consortium including Edgewater Technical Associates, Evans General Contractors, Process Engineering Associates, and Merrick & Co. The outcome of the evaluation will determine which entity leads the next stage of development for a site central to national security operations.
