Konkola Copper Mines taps Zensar for digital mining overhaul

A seven-week transition period has launched a strategic partnership between Konkola Copper Mines and Zensar Technologies, signaling a shift toward AI-driven mining in Zambia. The collaboration aims to modernize infrastructure across KCM’s integrated operations while establishing a permanent local presence for the Indian digital services firm.

The deal focuses on integrating intelligent automation and data-driven platforms to boost operational resilience across KCM’s sites in Chingola, Chililabombwe, Kitwe, and Nampundwe. By leveraging AI-enabled services, the mining giant intends to support its broader growth targets, including an ambitious goal to produce 300,000 tonnes of copper annually by 2030. Pushpender Singla, Executive Director of KCM, noted that the rapid initial deployment of services confirmed Zensar’s ability to navigate the specific complexities of the African mining sector.

Beyond technological upgrades, the partnership prioritizes local capacity building. Zensar has already onboarded 15 Zambian professionals as part of its entry into the market. Kaushik Chatterjee, Senior Vice President of Zensar’s Africa division, stated that the move is designed to foster sustainable growth alongside digital transformation. This engagement arrives as KCM pursues a $1.2 billion investment pledge from parent company Vedanta Resources, aimed at unlocking high-value projects like the Konkola Deep Mining initiative.
