ByteDance Secures $29.6 Billion Unsecured Loan for AI Expansion

ByteDance has locked in a $29.6 billion credit facility from a consortium of nearly 30 international banks, a massive capital injection driven by the social media giant's aggressive push into artificial intelligence. The deal represents one of the largest corporate financings in Asia this year, reflecting significant lender confidence.

Co-ordinated by Citigroup and JPMorgan, the three-year loan was significantly expanded from an initial $20 billion target due to overwhelming demand from financial institutions. Chinese banks account for more than 60% of the facility, though the syndicate also includes lenders from the United States, Europe, and Singapore. The agreement includes options to extend the term for an additional two years.

What makes this financing particularly notable is that it is entirely unsecured. ByteDance has pledged no assets or shares as collateral, a rarity for a loan of this magnitude. Analysts suggest this reflects the company's strong credit profile as it attempts to scale its AI infrastructure. The capital is earmarked for projects outside China, specifically supporting the company's role as an offtaker for data centers across Southeast Asia. This investment is critical for ByteDance as it competes with global hyperscalers in developing multimodal AI models and training systems.
