National Restaurant Association Launches New Public Safety Guide

Restaurants serve as community hubs, but their open-door nature creates inherent security vulnerabilities. To address these risks, the National Restaurant Association released a new resource today titled Always Ready: Public Safety, offering operators a structured framework to manage emergencies ranging from robberies to active threats in real time.

The guide emphasizes that while no establishment can fully eliminate external threats, proactive planning and structured training significantly improve outcomes. Operators are encouraged to focus on three core pillars: identifying facility vulnerabilities before incidents occur, establishing clear communication protocols during crises to assist first responders, and coordinating post-incident recovery efforts with insurers and staff.

"For restaurant operators, safety preparedness is good business," said Michelle Korsmo, President and CEO of the National Restaurant Association. The manual provides actionable advice on crisis communication and long-term reputation management, marking the fifth installment in the association's series. Previous editions have addressed utility disruptions, fire safety, and foodborne illness outbreaks, cementing the industry-wide effort to formalize response procedures across more than 1 million foodservice outlets.
