The August performance across construction, agricultural, and trucking sectors highlights a persistent trend of declining supply. Heavy-duty construction equipment inventory dropped 2.56% month-over-month, with crawler dozers leading the decline. Similarly, the used heavy-duty truck market saw inventory fall for the ninth consecutive month, down 37.7% year-over-year. This prolonged contraction suggests that owners are holding onto assets longer, creating a bottleneck that complicates acquisition for prospective buyers.
Despite the inventory crunch, value trends remain inconsistent. While asking prices for many categories are trending downward, auction values for specific segments—such as planters and certain heavy-duty trucks—showed unexpected resilience with monthly increases. The Sandhills Equipment Value Index spread, which measures the gap between asking and auction prices, tightened to 31% for high-horsepower tractors in August, down from 33% the previous month. This narrowing gap often signals that sellers are adjusting expectations to meet the realities of a more cautious buyer base, even as rental demand continues to provide a buffer for the broader industry.
